If you’re more inclined to watch a YouTube video to fix or build something rather than call in a professional, you’re likely a DIYer. Measuring tape. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Try to find one that is in both metric and imperial measure and durable in case it gets dropped from the top rung of the ladder.
Screwdrivers. This is plural because ideally, you’ll have both a Phillips and a flathead in a variety of sizes. The easiest ones to use are ratcheting. Even easier is an electric version!
Utility knife. A tool with lots of uses from opening, cutting, scoring and even making little marks in the wall for placement. Don’t forget to pack it with extra blades.
Hammer. Make sure the end has a good grip and that it is the correct size for your hand. Also use one that has a claw edge for repositioning nails.
Builder’s pencil. Of course, in a pinch a regular pencil will do, but a carpenter pencil can mark surfaces like concrete and stone. They are also specially shaped, so marking a straight line is easier to do.
Level. They come in a variety of sizes, so you can have a small one for hanging pictures or a larger one for more ambitious products. The most important concern, however, is they are accurate.
Flashlight. Instead of relying on your phone for a little extra light, have a small flashlight or even a head lamp in your toolbox to get good illumination in a dark area when you need to get the job done.
