Activities for Labor Day Family Fun

Observed on the first Monday of every September is Labor Day originated to pay tribute to the contributions of American workers. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century, and in 1894 President Grover Cleveland designated it as a federal holiday. Today it also represents the last hurrah of summer, and it’s celebrated with a three-day long weekend. Activities range from floating in a pool to heading straight for the beach. Try some of these SoCal ideas for a memorable holiday weekend.

Go to the races. The summer race season in Del Mar ends in September, so you can still cheer on your favorite jockey and horse on Labor Day. Gates open at 11 a.m. and the first post is 1 p.m.

Head for the hills. Up at Big Bear, they’re going all out with its first ever Labor Day fireworks show on Sunday, September 4, where fireworks will be set off from a barge in the middle of the lake. Watch from the shoreline, on one of the area’s many hiking trails or go out on the lake for an even better view.

Light a fire. After a long hot weekend of swimming, hiking, playing and sunbathing finish up the day with a bonfire on the beach. Pack up your favorite campfire food and head to Pacific Beach, Mission Bay Park or Shelter Island. Grab a firepit to enjoy with friends and family and ceremoniously sendoff summer with a crackle and a pop.

Wine down. September in California is also California Wine Month. Lucky for local oenophiles there are multiple wine-centric areas within a short drive to experience award-winning wines set amidst beautiful vineyards. Go either for the day or a weekend getaway. On September 3, head to Julian for 25th Annual Grape Stomp Festival!
