Four Fun Southern California Weekend Getaways
Even though people who live in Southern California are often the envy of other regions because of our access to miles of coastline, endless sunny days and fantastic warm weather (nearly year-round!), we also need a break. And sometimes we only have a few days to run away. Lucky for us we can take a quick journey to still experience California paradise, but in a different locale. Here are some fabulous getaways not too far from home.
Julian – Steeped in history, Julian is located in the Cuyamaca mountains with its beginnings rooted in the gold rush where guests can stay in a quaint B&B or historic inn. The best seasons to visit are in the spring to see the wildflowers or in the fall when the apples are harvested and turned into delicious apple pies.
Santa Catalina Island – A drive up to Dana Point in Orange County and a 90-minute catamaran ride, and you’ve reached a mini-island paradise. Catalina is home to plentiful small hotels and bed and breakfasts along with great restaurants and an abundance of outdoor activities like fishing, swimming, hiking, ziplining and more.
Idyllwild – If hiking is your go-to vacation, Idyllwild in the San Jacinto mountains is only a couple of hours away and offers 100s of miles of hiking trails lined with huge pine trees. The main town has a variety of restaurants, shops and galleries, and accommodations like quaint inns, cabins and bed and breakfasts that are nestled in the trees.
Baja California – South of the U.S.-Mexican border lies a swath of land full of adventure, dining, and activities. For example, a 30-minute drive south will land you in Rosarito, a seaside city where you can enjoy beaches, dine on fresh seafood and relax at one of the waterfront resorts.
