Winter Fun in San Diego

While the rest of the country suffers through winter conditions like minus zero temperatures, ice storms and unending snow shoveling, San Diego sits at a moderate temperature most days when soft Ugg boots and an extra fleecy hoodie are all that’s needed to venture outside. It’s a time when tourism is at a minimum and locals can explore the area without the crowds and the endless searching for a parking spot. Linger longer at some of these spots that make San Diego famous and a great place to live near.

Winter Sunsets. Head to known sunset vantage points like Sunset Cliffs, Balboa Park and Torrey Pines State Park to witness winter’s spectacular and predictable sunsets – especially after a storm.

Whale Watching. Bundle up and spend a few hours on a motorized boat or even a sailing schooner to get up close and personal to some of the thousands of migrating gray whales, blue whales or even spectacular humpback whales. Mid-December to mid-March is peak season to view these fantastic creatures. And you’ll likely spot playful dolphins and lounging sea lions.

Balboa Park. The crown jewel of San Diego, Balboa Park is a culturally rich, beautiful, interesting, educational and entertaining day out. From museums to walking paths to the world-famous San Diego Zoo, there is truly something for everyone, and it’s noticeably quieter during the winter because crowds and wait times are at a minimum and parking is at a maximum!

Old Town. This historical gem is always a good time and the place to visit for an entertaining and educating way to experience San Diego’s Mexican roots. Delicious restaurants, interesting shopping, historical buildings all in a park like setting await the return of locals as summer’s visitors have not yet arrived. Plan a day out with your family to immerse yourselves in this local treasure.
